Column Subtraction With Borrow

Subtraction can be performed by drawing sticks equal to the first digit in the question and then crossing number of sticks equal to the second digit in question the remaining sticks give the result.

For example let us solve the question

 

In the figure below there is a bundle of 10 sticks representing the digit 1 at tens place in the number 13 and 3 sticks as the digit at ones place is 3

The second digit is 7 so we have to cross 7 sticks.

But the sticks available are less so we will open the bundle of 10 sticks.

Now the total sticks are 13 and we will cross 7 sticks.

The remaining sticks is the answer which is 6.

Hence the answer is
